Mixed Criticality in Control Systems

چکیده
The complexity of industrial embedded systems is increasing continuously. Companies try to keep a leading position by offering additional functionalities and services. Systems are to be composed by multiple sensor, actuation and computation subsystems running in a coordinated way on a distributed platform. Due to the increment in processor power, it is possible to allocate a large number of functions in the same platform. This gives rise to mixed-criticality systems, when components with different criticality levels coexist in the same processor. This approach can lead to prohibitive certification costs. A better approach is to rely on partitioned systems, based on a hypervisor that isolates each of the virtual machines in the system. Components with different criticality levels are allocated to different partitions, in order to prevent interferences. The aim of this paper is to introduce mixed-criticality systems, to introduce the most challenging research topics, and to provide some background on the most promising techniques and research activities.

The development of mixed-criticality systems that integrate applications of different criticality levels (safety, security, real-time and non real-time) can provide multiple benefits such as product cost-size-weight reduction, reliability increase and scalability. However, the integration of applications of different levels of criticality leads to several challenges with respect to safety certi...
متن کاملIncorporating The Notion of Importance into Mixed Criticality Systems
Mixed criticality systems offer the opportunity to integrate system components with different levels of assurance that previously may have been placed on different nodes. While the vast majority of mixed criticality work features a HI and a LO criticality level, LO criticality tasks should not be mistaken for tasks with little value. Such tasks might contain mission critical functionality and a...
متن کاملOn Spatial Isolation for Mixed Criticality, Embedded Systems
This paper addresses some of the challenges of creating a system that enables not only the temporal isolation required for mixed-criticality systems, but also the necessary spatial isolation that enables the decoupling of assurance levels required for different pieces of software. We discuss the application of fine-grained isolation, hierarchical resource management, and the paravirtualization ...
متن کاملScheduling for Mixed-criticality Hypervisor Systems in the Automotive Domain
Virtualisation has been proposed for use in the automotive domain as it has the potential to reduce the number of ECUs (Electronic Control Units) that are required in a modern vehicle. In this paper we first introduce a visualisation architecture that makes use of two different types of execution-time servers to provide separation, low run-time overheads but short response-times for event-trigg...
متن کاملFixed-priority global scheduling for mixed-criticality real-time systems
There has been a growing interest in recent years in mixed-criticality real-time systems in which tasks are attributed different levels of criticality based on the degree to which their deadlines must be assured. While most of the initial efforts on mixed-criticality systems targeted single-processor systems, the research community has recently started to investigate multiprocessor mixed-critic...
